NOVAK WINS THE
BATTLE, DIXON WINS THE WAR!
ELKHART LAKE, WIS. (September 25, 2011) – Brian Novak took advantage of an
uncharacteristic late-race bobble by pole sitter and race leader Brandon
Dixon to be the first
F1000 across the stripe at the 2011 Sports Car Club of America National
Championship Runoffs held at Road America. Dixon quickly recovered but was
unable to mount a challenge to regain the lead and was forced to settle
for second. Novak qualified in the 3rd spot but advanced before the green flag
when 2nd place qualifier Jeremy Hill was late to the grid and forced to start
from the back. A wet but drying track made for treacherous conditions that
caught out June Sprints winner Bill McLaughlin who's race ended in the gravel
trap after making a stellar jump from his 7th place grid spot all the way to 2nd
before turn 5. For much of the race, the 3rd step on the podium was hotly
contested between Glenn Cooper and Lucian Pancea. As the two exited the fast
turn 1, they made contact that sent Cooper around and allowed Pancea to cruise
to the podium. Cooper rejoined and salvaged a 4th place
finish.
By
finishing second, Dixon was able to claim the 2011 Mystt Premium Vodka F1000
National Championship Presented by George Dean Racing Engines and Taylor Race
Engineering by a single point over Dave Palmer. Dixon takes home the
$1,500 grand prize in addition to the commemorative etched champagne glass.
Palmer nets $1,000 and Cooper grabs the third place prize of
$800.
Although he only
finished fifth in the season-long championship, Novak takes home the lion's
share of prize money. Coming into the weekend, he was eligible for the
Rilltech Racing/Speads Super Sweep Award. When he crossed the finish
line first, he was able to claim the $1,000 prize. The Runoffs win was worth
$500 and his season points total was worth $400, putting a total of $1,900 in
Novak's pocket.
