COELLO WINS JUNE SPRINTS!

GREEN BAY, WIS. (June 27, 2010) –

The June Sprints "weekend" actually started on Thursday with a Road America test day. All the registered F1000 drivers were present but Dan Robinson and Mike Beauchamp chose to observe and not take to the track. With only two sessions available during the day, the teams didn't have a lot of time to get their cars sorted. After the morning session, Dixon had even less time due to a spin into the inside tire wall exiting turn 14. A front toe link, wing, and nose cone were replaced in time for the afternoon session. Lap times weren't available but traps speeds approaching turn 5 showed that most cars were reaching a similar top speed of around 133 mph. The team of Bill McLaughlin Jr. was testing a low drag rear wing set-up that resulted in a slightly higher top speed.
When the official race sessions began, some teams were still working on sorting their cars. In the Friday morning practice, Glenn Cooper had some minor problems that prevented him from turning a lap and Coello chose to sit it out to save tires. The normally fast Brandon Dixon had to settle for 4th fastest, with fellow Citation driver tom Schwietz posting the fastest time of 2:10.3. He was followed by J.R. Osborne (2:12.1), McLaughlin (2:14.4), Dixon (2:14.86), Beauchamp (2:16.3), and Robinson (2:18.3).
Later that day, some drivers got the opportunity to redeem themselves, while others went the wrong way. At the end of the morning practice, Beauchamp's Van Diemen had a sprocket bolt come loose, causing some minimal damage but necessitating a sprocket change. Unfortunately, the team went to a gear ratio that was too tall and resulted in much lower top speeds. Dixon made the biggest jump in lap time, grabbing the provisional pole with a lap of 2:09.5. As expected, Coello wasn't too far behind with a 2:09.7, followed by Osborne, Schwietz, McLaughlin, Cooper, Robinson, and Beauchamp.
Overnight thunderstorms cleaned the track, making conditions even better for Saturday's final qualifying session and several drivers were able to capitalize on it. The biggest benefactor was Dixon, who solidified his pole position with a lap of 2:08.347, which is the fastest an F1000 car has ever gone at Road America. Coello and Osborne were unable to improve upon their Q1 times but retained their starting positions of 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Schwietz, McLaughlin, Cooper, and Robinson all found more speed on Q2 but also stayed where they were after the first qualifier. Beauchamp experienced an electrical problem that prevented any good laps, going even slower and starting last in the field. The final grid looked like this:

1. Brandon Dixon (Citation) 2:08.347
2. Niki Coello (Firman) 2:09.683
3. J.R. Osborne (Stohr) 2:10.580
4. Thomas Schwietz (Citation) 2:11.118
5. Bill McLaughlin Jr. (Firman) 2:11.579
6. Glenn Cooper (Firman) 2:12.260
7. Dan Robinson (Novak/Van Diemen) 2:17.454
8. Mike Beauchamp (Van Diemen) 2:17.612

Once again, severe thunderstorms rolled through Wisconsin overnight, cleaning the track but leaving it wet on Sunday morning. Several groups held their final qualifying sessions prior to the F1000 race which helped dry the track, but rain was on the horizon. At the green flag, Coello jumped past Dixon, taking the lead going into T1. Cooper had a fantastic start, overtaking Schwietz into T1, McLaughlin in T3, and pressuring Osborne on the run down to T5. Osborne was able to hold onto 3rd but on lap 2 was forced to pull off with car troubles, after his floor pan got bent in an off exiting T7. On lap 4, as they approached T3, Beauchamp and a spinning FE car came together, pushing Beauchamp into the gravel. There was no significant damage but he would go 2 laps down while the safety crew pulled him onto the track. For several laps, the order remained Coello, Dixon, Cooper, McLaughlin, Schwietz, Robinson, Beauchamp until McLaughlin was able to run down Cooper and take over the 3rd spot. Soon after, Schwietz was also able to catch Cooper but he was able to put a lapped car between them and hang onto 4th. Until the rain came.
With about 3 laps remaining, what started as a few drops in the back section became a downpour covering the entire track. As the pace slowed, cars began falling off the track and the order got shuffled. Up front, Coello was able to keep it straight but Dixon, now struggling with a loose rear wing, had trouble keeping the car under him and spun several times, eventually handing 2nd place to McLaughlin. He was able to recover in time to hold on to 3rd. The slippery track also claimed Cooper as a victim. He spun exiting T1 and got high-centered on the curbing. Schwietz was finally able to get around him for 4th and Cooper rejoined in time to salvage 5th place. Aside from a 180 degree spin and recovery under braking into T5, Robinson ran a relatively clean race and came home 6th. Beauchamp took the checkered flag in 7th, 2 laps down. Finishing order:

1. Coello
2. McLaughlin Jr
3. Dixon
4. Schwietz
5. Cooper
6. Robinson
7. Beauchamp

With the June Sprints dust settled, Dixon maintains his huge lead in the 2010 F1000 National Championship presented by George Dean Racing Engines and Taylor Race Engineering. Cooper holds on to second and Coello is still fourth but now only one point behind third place David Burkett. McLaughlin leapfrogs to fifth, passing Tom Beattie, Robinson remains in the seventh spot and Beauchamp jumps into the top 10. There are still plenty of races left and only a driver's best 6 finishes count toward the championship so the prizes are still up for grabs.

With his win, Coello has now completed leg 1 of the Rilltech Racing/Speads Super Sweep Prize. He's currently leading the points in Central Division and is always a favorite to win the Runoffs so he stands a good chance of taking home $1,000, courtesy of Rilltech Racing/Speads.

By going from his 5th starting position to a 2nd place finish, McLaughlin scores an additional 3 points and takes the lead in the G. Jezarian PassMaster Award. Drivers have three more opportunities, including the Runoffs, to score points toward a set of custom-designed, hand-made rose plated F1000 cuff links, courtesy of G.
